Flashlight Theater presents...
The Day The Earth Stood Still

Dateline: The Unknown

Klaatu and his robot soldier Gort travel 250 million miles through the void of space to bring hope...and a dire warning...to the people of Earth. Within minutes of landing his craft on teh Washington DC mall, Klaatu is greeted by what has often been humankind's reaction to the unknown...violence...he is shot in the arm. Gort immediately begins to vaporize cannons, tanks, and other weapons, but is commanded to stop by Klaatu. Klaatu is rushed to Walter Reed hospital, and Gort is left standing by the spacecraft...immune to any human investigation...and awaiting further instructions.

So begins this Korean War-era Cold War cautionary tale. This is one of the finest science fiction movies ever produced. While the film is approaching the 60th Anniversary of its release...it as fresh and frightening to viewers today as it was when it first hit movie screens in the summer of 1951. But the real punch of this story is its powerful message of peace. In fact, The Day The Earth Stood Still received a Golden Globe Award for promoting international understanding.

Be sure to catch this classic film...on the show baby-boomers have been clamoring for...Flashlight Theater!

Michael Rennie as Klaatu, with the robot Gort.
